LONDON - Hoping to quell controversy after large swaths of seats appeared unfilled, London Olympic organizers said British troops and schoolchildren had been given free tickets Sunday to fill many of the vacant rows.

A day after the city reveled in the splendor of Danny Boyle’s critically acclaimed Opening Ceremonies, many locals were piqued Saturday when television footage showed empty seats at some of the most popular sporting events, including swimming and gymnastics, that they had been told were sold out. Such scenes ignited speculation that corporate sponsors had been provided tickets they weren’t using, leaving the public on the outside looking in.

  • you are making far too much of empty seats, they are empty because they are corporate sponsored seats, sold to companies who are notorious for giving hundreds away to people who usually fail to show up, it happens in all big sporting venues here in the UK.     • @tok715 I didn't know until tonight, the majority of the empties belong to International Sport Orgs of every European country and other foreign clubs and associations. They too (the euro's) are having bad financial times, it's really expensive to travel here from anywhere in Europe and then have to stay in London's well overpriced hotels makes this a trip very expensive indeed especially if there's a whole family involved, and all to watch some heats and it never stops friggin raining!

    • @ftpblump This is true , i went to the 1992 olympics because i got the tickets free thru company hospitality and i can guarantee you that 90% of the tickets are given out as freebies by big companies in the same way . These companies spend millions on hospitality every year to keep their big customers happy and the olympics is the favourite event for this.
