  • The USAAF air crews had nuts bigger than medicine balls. We all owe them much thanks.

  • It wasnt shot down, it was hit by a bomb from an aircraft above it.

    • @Bawbag

You're right, that's actually clearly visible in the clip.

Not the only time this happened:

      I stand corrected. http://www.pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/b-24/44-42058.html

"There is a myth about an American bomb striking the wing. We dispelled when Dan got his superbly cleaned up version [of this footage]. When looking frame by frame (which I have done for hours), one can see no bomb strike the wing (although you can see plenty of bombs falling from above, as he points out) and one can clearly see the wing explode from below. Even the vets from 494th go back and More..

Interesting stuff, and kind of sad.

  • The airmen can't bail out when that happens. The spinning airplane generates centrifugal forces that pin the men inside like a carnival ride.

  • Excellent footage. Bad chances for that crew bailing out from that burning B24.

  • The shot of the plane losing it's wing has been seen many times but it's still one of the most graphic views of the danger our fly-boys were in back in the day.

I think the "Bomb through wing" in this case has to do with the angle of the camera filming that plane as it drops it's bombs. The plane was hit as it unloaded it's bombs and they appear to be passing through the wing.
