Albania already has almost half of the population christian. Orthodox Chrsitians in South did not convert during the centuries, and neither did the catholic highlanders. I think that's what was embraced first. In 1976 Albania was self-declared the first atheistic state in the world and all religious practices were banned. It stayed like that until 1992. I was 10 years old back then and I didn't know what God meant. The state is strictly secular. The religious leaders take pride in the fact that Christians and Muslims have always went along well in Albania. Muslim leaders visit Christian ones for Christmass, and vice versa. Marriages among each other were even encouraged, for patriotic reasons, because having some Christians and some Muslims could cause a separation of the nation.
