At least 10 Japanese nationalist activists have landed on a group of disputed islands, amid an escalating territorial row with China.
The activists swam ashore after a flotilla carrying about 150 people reached Japan's controlled Senkaku islands, called Diaoyu in China.
Japan's coast guard is now questioning the activists, who had earlier been denied permission to visit the islands.
The move triggered protests in China and strong condemnation from Beijing.
Anti-Japan protests are spreading in China. A demonstration reportedly turned violent in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. The rallies began after the Japanese authorities arrested a group of Chinese activists who landed on Japan's Senkaku Islands last Wednesday. The territory is also claimed by China and Taiwan. The Japanese Consulate in Shenzhen said on Sunday that more than 1,000 people had taken part in the demonstration. Some protesters broke the windows of a building with a Japanese restaurant. Marchers threw plastic bottles at Japanese vehicles. They also overturned police cars that were made in Japan. About 400 people gathered in front of the Japanese Consulate in Guangzhou. They chanted anti-Japan slogans and called for a boycott of Japanese products. They marched to a nearby park under the supervision of police officers. About 1,000 people held a protest in front of the Japanese Consulate in Hong Kong.
