Video shows Arrival of masked and armed militants, statement by Abu Bilal Media, spokesman of al-Mujahideen Brigades (in Arabic) claiming they killed the soldier : An accidental weapon discharge was the most probable cause of Canadian-born St.-Sgt. Noam Adin Rechter Levy's death pre-dawn Thursday during an IDF raid in the West Bank town of Bir Zeit, military sources said.
Levi, 20, from Mitzpe Netofa near Tiberias, was killed during a routine patrol of Bir Zeit north of Ramallah with his company from the Duhifat Battalion.
IDF sources said that during the routine operation, the force encountered a group of Palestinian rioters. At one point, Levy and other soldiers became separated from the rest of the force and then the shot was heard. Medics immediately treated Levy but doctors pronounced him dead at the scene.
The IDF launched an investigation into the incident and initially said it was possible that Levy was killed in a friendly fire incident. Later in the day, the IDF said that while it was still waiting for ballistic results, it appeared that Levy accidentally discharged his weapon during the encounter with the Palestinian rioters, fatally wounding himself.
Levi is the first soldier to be killed in the West Bank in over a year. Duhifat, which is part of the Kfir Brigade, is the battalion in charge of the Ramallah region and has carried out almost daily operations there over the past five years.
Levy moved to Israel with his family from Montreal aged eigh
