By now we have probably all seen the video of this kid almost killing himself while lifting alone in his basement. I’ve seen this video floating around here, it’s been posted and reposted so there has likely been a lot said about it already. Maybe to the conclusion that you shouldn’t lift alone
I won’t argue that, it’s probably not a good idee and as we have already seen it nearly cost this kid his life. Obviously he was lifting a little more than he could handle.
But at the same time there are a lot of people that lift at home and it’s not always easy to find someone to stand and watch you just in case something happens. Which is the case with me, I have my bench set up in a garage and for the most part I never have a spotter.
And ya, it dangerous, even with a lesser amount of weight. I read somewhere in the comments about a guy who was killed lifting 135 which is relatively light. But apparently this guy simply failed on his last rep, he couldn’t bring it back up and that was it, lights out,,, seems like a crap reason to die.
So in light of this I wanted to share a couple of tricks that I have used and do use. First off I’m not advocating or recommend that anyone should lifting on their own but if you’re going to do it any way this could be helpful to you.
This may not save you from being injured but it could save your life….. and it’s simple to do

Don't workout, it's too dangerous. *bites a snickers*

@coehlo I am sure eating unhealthy food such as a Snickers bar is far more dangerous for your health than working out.

This is so informative. Common sense would have never told me to do either of those things...I would have sat there and suffocated.

@Hucklebee Yes I know. That isn't fathomable to me. You have to be on a different level of stupid/egotistical to die from weight lifting.

does this really require an explanation and a video? I feel like I just watched a tutorial on how to put on a glove.

I don't lift free weights alone, I have a bowflex for that. Much better for lifting without a spotter. And that guy "that we all want to look like" obviously shot himself shitless with steroids, lol.

I just started to work out recently and will use the hints for good measure. Not managing the last rep is my fear too... so I use quite less weight than I should use for maximum efficiency.

I'm sure double-egg guy would be your spotter for 50 cents/hour, he's desperate for money.

@timmyfu The camera was watching you! In case you failed, did you write a last note to upload the video on Liveleak? ;)
Joking aside I think a lot of people don't have the possibility to get a spotter... I think of all my friends I'm the only one working out and I'm living alone. Have a cheap gym not far away but the people there are quite "special" and the equipment is always occupied... long story short, know how to help yourself and don't do anything overly dangerous should be the More..

What about having guardrails at both sides to prevent the weight from falling on your body? This would be much safer than human guards having an eye on you!
