Video of sheriff using 'very excessive' force at Red Deer Alberta Court House

-------------------------THE MAN IS DEAF AND MUTE.-------------------------------
I neglected to add that important piece of info when i posted the video, sorry folks

The video captured on several cameras shows the chain of events from when Bill Berry, 52, entered the building to when he was followed out by a sheriff and two medics.

Berry, a throat cancer survivor, went to pay a traffic ticket at the courthouse on Dec. 9. He inadvertently entered through an open exit door and went directly to the fines counter without going through the security screening.

Berry is unable to speak and breathes through a tube in his neck. He tried to communicate with a sheriff who approached him after he missed going through security screening. That sheriff, Thomas Bounds, pushed Berry toward the exit, grabbed and placed him in a bear hug while trying to drag him from the courthouse.

Berry’s stoma tube in his neck became dislodged so he couldn’t breathe and he convulsed for a short while.

Four other sheriffs arrived quickly. One of them replaced Berry’s breathing tube.

  • What's wrong with "excuse me Sir, you have to go through the other door"?

  • Police are the biggest terrorizing street gang in the world... Also the most violent.

  • The guy did loose his speach and hearing to cancer and was trying to communicate with the officer. Although he didn't use excessive force, he failed to properly analyze the situation and reverted to force before realizing the man was disabled. Could have been handled differently with a little patience. Basically if the officer felt he was a threat, he panicked by manhandling him like that. Cops are too quick to use physical force, we see it here on LL everyday.

    • @humanbean Who writes these "training" manuals anyway. Something has to be done about the out of control cops on power trips here. I think once we introduce criminal sanctions for their incorrect actions in the line of duty (not merely civil suit and firing), maybe things will change.

  • To all you saying it was intentional...

    A) Both "exit" signs wouldn't have been visible because the doors where left wide open. If it's so important and secure- Why the F did the police leave the doors wide open?

    B) Normally the entrance is on your right side so if you saw the open doors with no sign on your right side you probably would have casually walked right in as he did.

  • Heartbreaking to watch, see the fear in his face at 00.53...

Some guys think when they are given a security uniform they suddenly become a tough guy, and try to act the big Macho Man.. Makes me sick.. that poor guy must have been petrified...

NOTE TO ALL SECURITY GUARDS: If you are scared of spiders you can go to the gym and bulk up, get a job as a security guard and think you are tough.. but you will still be scared of spiders! Being tough is in the mind not the appearance!

    Ps.. Security gua More..

  • ...so, Mr. Berry's face is clear for all to see - what about Officer Shit-fer-Brains?...oh yea, innocent until judged unaccountable for your actions...another bad apple tarnishing a once honorable and highly esteemed profession...sad...

    • @SpIderZ when was it ever honourable? Only difference now is that they are being recorded so we know of all the shit they do. Guarantee you before modern video technology things were much worse and pigs did whatever they fucking wanted, because who's going to believe a "criminal" over a police officer?

    • @Flanuva ...huh?...far from a cop hater...I have respect for the law and those who work thanklessly to uphold it...bad "employees" like Sherriff Buford T Justice here have absolutely no right representing a badge and should and will get called out for it...don't attempt to lump me in with a bunch of mouth pieces with an axe to grind just because they got a speeding ticket...

  • pigs going directly to red zone with every situation. Instead of first asking what the fuck is up they automatically go to force.

pretty easy saying that when your life isn't on the line every day from assholes who think they are above the law.

The risk is part of the job. If they can't handle that kind of pressure then they should look for another line of work. They work for us, they are our servants, the least they could do is act human for goodness sake.

    • @brioe162
looks to me they are handling the risk just fine.
I don't care who you are, if you have to deal with pukes EVERY day who are trying to harm you I am not likely going to give the benefit of the doubt to some asshole with a chip on his shoulder who won't listen to instructions. Im sure the staff at WCB in edmonton a few years back wished this happened instead of the hostage taking that ensued.

  • Poor training again.

(hand on sidearm) "Sir please pass through security!"

The choke hold was not needed at all. It was a mistake, with proper comunication this could have been avoided. I hope the sheriff lost his job and was charged.

Uh you mean like the wet dream most of the rightwing nut sacks here have everyday.

And the same folks that always defend the indefensible : "He inadvertently entered through an open exit door" that could happen to anyone.

  • "Four other sheriffs arrived quickly. One of them replaced Berry’s breathing tube." This statement completely baffles me. These stories usually read: Four other sheriffs arrived quickly. One of them Tasered Berry 100 times totaling 15 minutes, while the other officers kicked and punched him in the throat. Berry later died of "unknown causes" in the hospital, with the taser pins still lodged in his testicles.

  • At least ONE of the deputies had the presence of mind to replace the breathing tube, otherwise this would be a wrongful death lawsuit and that man would have lost his life. Still, first deputy acted like an idiot.

  • Guys, entering through an exit only door is a very serious crime in Canada. They forgot to mention that he was also wanted for ripping the tag off of his matress.

  • I live in Red Deer, I have been to that court house on a couple of occasions. The new Alberta sheriffs are the gestapos of Alberta, they are the guys that couldn't be real cops who have suddenly been given new power by the province. Basically mall cops who were given guns, and sent out to enforce traffic. It's a joke.

    • @Rebel_Radius seriously Rebel, it was a political move here. The sheriffs here used to be unarmed prison guards. Some genius in the Government gave them guns and sent them out to give speeding tickets, they are like rats now. I have been to the court house before, and it would be very easy to get confused there, there are no directions outside the building on which doors to enter, but there will probably be some now....
