Ducati crash sends rider over the handlebars

Jim Bucklin was lucky. Doing a ride with a few friends in Arizona, he crashed his Ducati (that is sad enough) and flipped over his handlebars landing on his head and left shoulder followed by a boulder. Had he not worn safety gear, he would have died. This video shows the importance of having proper gear when riding.

I have been riding for 15 years and consider myself experienced. I NEVER leave without a helmet, armoured jacket, gloves and some form of protection for your legs (jeans, leathers) and boots. Ride safe and ride smart

  • Man I forget the term, but did he crash because his eyes locked onto where he DIDN'T want to go? Man this sucks.

  • i had an almost identical accident in April of this year.

All my (more experienced) biker mates said I should have leaned more, given it more gas and gone round instead of bottling out and straightening up.

The first reaction of a shit rider finding himself too fast in a turn ... is to apply the front brake. That simply makes the bike sit up and condemns you to the ditch.

Shame to see a nice bike destroyed but well done for wearing all the right kit.

  • Proof!

    GoPro cameras make you crash!

That, and entering corners at to high of a speed.

in this case using 30% of a bikes possible lean angle and traction capabilities with some target fixation, not so much the speed.

That's a 200+ kmh (120mph+) sweeper no sweat on a bike and surface like that. You are only limited by braking room for the next corner really. Unless there was invisible gravel or oil it's 100% rider error.

  • What this video fails to convey is WHY the rider went off the road.

Just a hint~ leaving the pavement and venturing into a rock pile tends not to end well. (might want to take a Sharpie and write that little tidbit of wisdom on the palm of your hand before your next ride)

  • Yeah, if I had those driving "skills", I would actually wear 5 layers of protective gear.

      excellent advice!!!

if theres a 10 commandments of riding, that should be one of them.

i will lean until i lowside, rather than any other outcomes.

can't tell you how many times a bike has amazed me and held the corner using that very philosophy.

  • Jeans aren't good enough at open road speeds, nailed my legs, extreme bruising and some decent scarring. Couldn't get outta bed myself for days. And of course the one time only that I ever wore them open road, due to riding buddies changing plans at last minute, after I'd already arrived at meet point. Around 80,000km of extremely twisty NZ open road riding, in full race leathers or similar. One moment of lapsed judgement - tired, hungry, suspension temporarily set hard for absent pillion, big b More..

  • Dude, make sure YOU never leave without gear at least.

It totally looks like you intentially drove off the road. rider behind you didn't sway at all because of "wind". Maybe its time you hang up your helmet old man (if you have a wife and kids) if not, fuck it! Its your life. Your on a motorcycle. A MOTORCYCLE
Gotta love those go pros though. Awesome clear footage.

  • Guy didn't trust his bike enough to lay it down in the curve and just froze up. Maybe he usually rides a full dress bike that you can't lay into corners and forgot for a moment what a sport bike can do.

    • @kajidono probably right on that one.

or forgot he was on the hypermotard and was trying to save the chrome on his dresser by running her in straight. ha
