Mustang / Skyraider Crash

Loss of P-51 "Big Beautiful Doll" at Flying Legends after mid-air with Skyraider. In a testament to the Douglas Skyraider, it had four feet of wing removed and managed to successfully land. The P-51 lost control and the pilot safely bailed out.

Pay particular attention to the recovery of the Skyraider. Absolutely incredible flying skills.

No injuries.

  • I would have been weeping the whole way down in my chute, then looking to choke the living shit out of the A-1 pilot when I touched down!!

  • American Ground attack aircraft.. Built to destroy and not be destroyed! Looks like the P51 was knocked out of it's airflow and stalled causing the crash. Thank god the pilot got out. Still a hit like that and both pilots survive.... Western aircraft engineering at it's finest!

    • @Aariss
Lol, "knocked out if its airflow", he lost his elevator and part of the tail on the crash the plane was unflyable, it never stalled, just nose dove and crashed.

  • What's really amazing is the lack of a post-crash fire. Mustangs use avgas, not jet fuel. When they auger in, there's usually a huge fireball. That's another stroke of luck for the P-51 pilot. He bailed out so late that if there had been a fireball, he likely would have become part of it.
