US Navy Missle Detroyer Hit By Oil Tanker Near Iran In The Straight Of Hormuz

The USS Porter, a guided-missile destroyer collided with an oil tanker
in the straight of Hormuz between Iran and the United Arab Eremites
early Sunday. No oil was leaked into the straight, which remains open,
and the Destroyer was able to operate under it's own power after the
collision. The oil tanker, owned by Japan's Mitsui OSK, was bound for
Fujairah from Mesaieed in Qatar, according to ship tracking websites.

  • Or did the American warship think the tanker should get out of HIS way?

    • @pinkskin

I can imagine that warship captain saying
"haa, Im the one with the guns here, evade!" to the oil tanker...

on the other side, tankers like that have a very secure system
to avoid these collisions, like TCAS in airplanes...

  • I don't know how many career Naval Officers careers are now over, but surely the Captain and the Officer of the Deck are now done for sure... maybe even the Executive Officers too depending on what went down!

  • Yeah, they got hit by a plodding ginormous oil tanker, but I'm SURE they can evade an Iranian cruise missile, LOL.

  • Looking at the shape of the damage, I think it was a glancing blow and not a straight on hit. The way the Destroyer deck is collapsed is similar to the shape of an oil tanker (Duh) but notice the damage is only on the top 2 or 3 levels below decks.

Also, when the second sentence in the news story is "no oil was leaked" doesn't say much for our appreciation for human life.

Captain, OOD, Look outs (especially STBD), radar operator, sonarmen will either be fired or won't advance agai More..

  • From what I heard on the news, there was only light damage and nobody was injured.

  • So it's missiles are guided...but who's guiding the damn ship??? Oil tankers can't see much and aren't known to maneuver well...so WTF was the US Navy doing other than staying in the way. Now $$$$$$$$ will be spent repairing the ship. And it will be out of commission for a some time. Idiots!
