My place has sustained some damage. Footage i filmed after the second decent aftershock.
No doubt you seen the city photos but the damage is the 'Burbs is surreal mountains of silt and damage, it was so short and soooo violent. The damage is so extreme, i'm surprised there was no death other than the city center. Quite a chunk of the south island fels this and aftershocks.
ou get maybe 1-2 seconds to respond before everything starts to shake, you know instantly that is this everywhere. You feel it in your bones, the whole ground shakes, it doesn't matter how 'big' or 'earthquake proof' it is.
It will shake. The ground will turn to liquid. It feel like and looks like hell is rising up out of the ground.
Iv noticed a pattern that it started sep 4 then over the months the shocks went closer to the coast, like a burb or fart soon there a real release.
Christchurch is a changed city.
It will take time to heal these wounds, its a surreal time.

That doesn't look like soil liquefaction. That is actually water coming up out of the ground, likely from compression of an aquifer. Soil liquefaction occurs when there is a pressure and density change in the "soil" (or whatever the substrate might be) caused by vibration. If you had soil liquefaction around you house you would know it because your house would be sinking and/or the foundation would be breaking apart.

I read an article that said this was also a major problem for much of California's earthquake prone areas. Not with actual water, just soil becoming soft and acting like liquid in it's structure and movements.

1811-1812, New Madrid, central U.S., ground became as liquid with sand geysers spraying and with a distinct sulfur smell erputing all around, horses and wagons sunk as stones into the previously solid ground, once the shaking stopped, the horses and wagons were fixed (like concrete),... the ground and ground water do in fact mix like mixing concrete, once the shaking stops, it sets, fairly instantly...look up some of the studies done for this...can swallow entire homes like quicksand only to loc More..

soil liquefaction refers to the soil behaving in a manner consistent with a liquid. The soil can not become a liquid this is probably a broken pipe caused by the aftershock.
