Man jailed over pop bottle dispute

An argument over a 20 cent bottle deposit resulted in the arrest of a 20 year-old Saginaw man in Breckenridge Tuesday afternoon..

Michael James Joseph Parent was allegedly returning five bottles to Smitty’s Party Store on M-46 in Breckenridge when he dropped and broke two of them, said Breckenridge Police Chief Bob Mecomber.

An argument ensued with the store clerk, who declined to pay Parent the 20 cents for the broken bottles.

The clerk told him to take his bottles and leave, Mecomber said.

Parent did, but he allegedly came back and another argument began with Parent demanding his full 50 cents. When the clerk still refused, he allegedly pulled a knife and threatened the clerk.

Parent was arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon. He was arraigned Tuesday in Gratiot County District Court and placed on a $15,000 bond.
