PROPANE TANKS EXPLODE AT McDONALDS AS TEMPERATURES SOAR IN COACHELLA, C

~ Two propane tanks in the back of a pickup truck exploded in front of a McDonald's drive-thru in
Coachella, Calif. 92236.
~ The man was in the drive-thru at McDonald’s, located at 83-097 Ave. 48, about 1:45 p.m.
Saturday April 21, 2012 when he heard a hissing noise coming from one of two tanks in the back
of his pickup truck, so the driver went to check it out. When the unidentified driver then tried to
fix the leak by turning the valve, static electricity caused the tank to blow, fire officials told the
newspapers. Thus turning the truck into a massive fireball.
~ Firefighters in Coachella, Calif. said 100-degree temperatures caused pressure to build up
inside one of the tanks, causing a leak. .
~ A helpful bystander took the man and his family to the hospital. The driver suffered
second-degree burns but is expected to survive, and thankfully no one else suffered life
threatening injuries during the incident. Three others were in the truck, including two children,
& all managed to escape uninjured.
~ The restaurant was evacuated and flames charred the outside of the building. Metal pieces of
the propane tank also hit nearby cars.
~ Two videos, 1st video is news video, 2nd video is closer & clearer full video. Watch till before 2 minute. mark

  • I'm calling B.S. on this one. These tanks are designed to withstand all sort of shit... I refuse to believe high temps caused these tanks to go up.

It's plausible that something else went down, but something else was reported in the media... you know... "for your sake".

    • @ModCon81 Yeah..."exposure to desert heat" caused this? I don't think so either. Those tanks have a safety factor in the design. Transporting them in designed for temps shouldn't create a problem. Now maybe the guy is an idiot and forgot to completely close the valve..maybe.

  • Oh, and classic precursers to a BLEVE explosion, with emergency venting on the container, high pressure hissing, etc. Police containment here was a joke. Several cars that drove by were in the immediate danger area from the inevitable blast. Not too smart.

  • The weather had nothing to do with it.
Gets hotter than that here and in many other places.
You don't hear of those things going off all over the place every summer.
Reposted and there are two vids not shown here.

  • Sorry, the truck caught on fire then the pressure relief valves let go igniting the propane. Flame impingement caused the tans to BLEVE. 150 degree heat would not have caused the relief valves to open.

    • @mechbradley03 Actually someone would have roped the truck and pulled it out of the way so people could still get their lunch and make it back to work on time.

  • I would hope McDonalds learned its lesson from the lawsuit on serving coffee to hot to drink. I guess not.
