Copthorne Hotel manager slandering a disabled person

This video was originally uploaded to youtube. I have had an issue with the Plymouth Copthorne Hotel using the front public pavement as it's personal car park, blocking access on that pavement to people in wheelchairs and mobility scooters.

I took matters into my own hands last week and put signs and tape on the cars, and produced a youtube video of my run-in with the management: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hl1Ad6nAHxs

A disability activist from the US phoned up the Copthorne Hotel later that evening and spoke with the duty manager James. James told her that I was not actually disabled (a lie), that I was an ex customer who was banned for being drunk and abusive (another lie - I do not drink, and have never frequented the hotel bar) and that I was on a police list of known vagrants, troublemakers and homeless people in Plymouth (probably another lie - though I do have a history of standing up for disability rights).

James reported this video to youtube for 'breach of privacy', and youtube took it down - so I'm uploading it here in the hope that Jame's words and actions will be archived for all eternity.

  • The dude at the hotel, James, was actually pretty fucking patient for answering all of her annoying questions. If this hotel doesn't satisfy your needs, go to another one.

  • All he said she said, she also doesn't tell him he is being recorded and also lies about wanting a room. Instead she leads the guy on him thinking she wants a room, then starts complaining out of nowhere referencing some video etc.... despite how wrong they were there is not very much integrity in the way they try to make the hotel look mean and stupid. Call in the violation if it is one after that it's up to your Local PD to follow up, if they don't then the bigger problem would be the police More..

    Some quick research into your background uncovers a wealth of offences and indeed instances of what I would term 'over-zealous activism'. You claim not to be well known around Plymouth for such actions, however as someone who has been in court More..

  • Contact the council. They love clamping cars. That is the only positive way to approach this. What you have done is vandalism and you are lucky they've not pressed charges.

    • @kingofthebox Bollocks to that. The UK law defines vandalism as any "deliberate damage" done to someone else's property.

      There is no mention of "permanent" or the extent of the damage in the definition. And it is a "crime" in the legal sense of the word. It's not an "offense".

  • Points to note:

    1) I do not possess a mobile phone, so calling the police/council was not an option.
    2) I had spent 4 years complaining directly to the hotel, and the situation continued. Other local disabled people had also had no results from complaining to the hotel, council or police.
    3) 2 days of activism followed by shaming the hotel on youtube resulted in fresh double yellow lines painted outside.

    And yes, I used to protest Scientology in 2008.

  • Video on youtube shows a better description of the problem.The cars are parked on a curbed sidewalk and at the end is a sidewalk ramp designed for wheelchair access or disability scooter access.They're illegally parked on the sidewalk not next to one and blocking the ramp which should result in immediate towing and impound.This picture looks like they're sitting on a drive.Notice the curb in the bottom left corner where the road is.Chain them up and drag them down the road.
