Deadly Hot Air Balloon Crash in Egypt (Three Videos)

Eighteen Asian and European tourists died when a hot air balloon crashed early on Tuesday near the ancient Egyptian town of Luxor.
Officials say the crash was caused by a mid-air explosion in the hose that connects the balloon's burner and gas canister.
The pilot survived by jumping from the basket when it was about 10 meters from the ground.
One tourist also survived.
The explosion took place at around 1000 feet, as the hot air balloon passed over Luxor's famous pharaonic temples, and tombs of the Valley of the Kings.
18 Asian and European tourists have died in a hot air balloon crash near the ancient Egyptian town of Luxor.

The balloon came to ground on the west bank of the Nile river.
Its wreckage was scattered in an open field, where rescuers recovered what appear to be the bodies of some of the victims.

Once when I was in Luxor and I was crossing the Nile on one of the ferries, I saw a hot air balloon come speeding towards the ground. It managed to lift again just in time but it still hit the mast of a nearby felucca (traditional wooden sailboat). They came so close to us that I could see the faces of some of the tourists on board and they looked terrified. I instantly remembered their faces when I heard about this accident. It must have been horrible.

Something's off here. There is no way the pilot jumped out of that thing 10m from the ground as it was in freefall and lived. That's not physically possible. And the description says the explosion occured at height so...needs more details. Either way, RIP, because that is a fucking awful way to go. It was nice to hear the witness in the other balloon praying for them. So sad.

@Katyinpg He would not necessarily have reduced his injuries by jumping, but he would at least not have been trapped in the remains of the basket (which was on fire). Though jumping from about 10m seems about optimal, as the balloon would have been accelerating though travelling slower than he would have been if he had jumped from higher.

I believe that safety checks, equipment checks and general upkeep and maintenance aren't a high priority in these countries. Willing to be corrected on that. Such a shit way to go. RIP.

@Mootle Many Western aircraft crash too. I am sure the rate of Western aircraft crashing is much higher than the rate of Middle-Eastern aircraft crashing (except in war periods then...). So quality control in Western countries is very bad huh? And Hot Air Balloons are much more vulnerable than aircraft...

That would have been one horrible way to go.
First you realize there's a problem and he can't put the fire out, then the balloon itself catches fire and you know its very serious,,
then that sinking feeling when you are falling and there is NOTHING you can do to save you life.
Pretty sad way to go.
