If you registered to vote at Wal-Mart, you may want to check to see which political party you're listed under. In August, we told you about a registration group, "Young Political Majors" whose workers were allegedly tricking shoppers into registering with the Republican Party. KPSP Local 2 has now learned that the man behind the alleged scene is facing felony charges.
Authorities say Mark Jacoby is a professional circulator...someone who organizes voter registration efforts like those that take place in front of shopping stores. The trouble is, Jacoby allegedly is not a lawful resident of California and as such he can't legally run this type of business.
Los Angeles County prosecutors have charged Jacoby with With perjury and voter registration fraud concerning Jacoby's activities in that county. Regarding allegations of fraud in the Coachella Valley, Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Ed Miller tells KPSP Local 2: "We are investigating the organization... if there was relevant illegal conduct in whatever county that could be used as evidence in this case...in the case against Young Political Majors".
Aside from the current case case, Miller tells KPSP Local 2 that his office is investigating a second similar case involving "Young Political Majors". So far, the Riverside County District Attorney's office has no ongoing investigation into voter registration fraud that Mark Jacoby may have been involved with.
If convicted, Jacoby faces up to five years in prison. He's currently out of jail on $50,000 dollars bond.
