Police have issued alert after a man walking his dog was attacked and his throat slashed in the Lakeview neighborhood on the North Side.

The man told police he was attacked around 11 p.m. Sunday in the 1200 block of West Byron, according to a community alert issued by police.

The attacker walked past the victim, grabbed him from behind and cut him on the throat with a knife, the alert said. The man was taken to a hospital with injuries that were not life threatening. The suspect fled on foot.

The attacker was described as black, about 30, 6-foot-1, dark complexion with an afro hairstyle and a white T-shirt with black stripes and black shorts, the alert said.

A Chicago man walking his dog near Wrigley Field late Sunday night in the city's Lakeview neighborhood was attacked by a man he believes is a sociopath still on the loose.

Michael Schmidt says he got a good look at the man who slashed his throat in an apparently random attack, requiring 40 stitches and causing the 39-year-old to lose massive amounts of blood, according to CBS Chicago.

Chicago police on Thursday afternoon released a sketch of the attacker, who has been described as about black, 30 years old and 6-foot-1. He wore his hair in an afro style, the Chicago Tribune reports.

The attacker reportedly stood over Schmidt's body and stared at him after jumping him from behind and slicing his throat with a 10-inch blade.

"He never said one word. He stood there for about ten seconds, turned around, walked away," Schmidt said in an interview with the station (see video above).

Schmidt says he's "going public" with his story because he believes the police haven't done enough to warn the community.

On Tuesday night, the police precinct Schmidt had worked with sent him a text message saying that the composite sketch of his attacker had been circulated, ABC Chicago reports.

Schmidt plans to meet with Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) to discuss safety in the area.
