God is 100% Holy and 100% Just.
Sin is doing anything morally wrong, whatsoever. Even the slightest sinful thought is too much for God to tolerate, because He is 100% Holy.
- This means that He is totally without sin, and will punish every single sin to fullest extent no matter what.
- When we sin we are separated from God, because God does not tolerate any sin. This is why we cannot see Him, and this is also why we do not recognize Him, and ask does He exist?
- If we die in our sin, guilty before God of having done even the slightest thing wrong we will be separated from Him forever in Hell. This is because God is 100% Holy and will not tolerate anything that is sinful or unclean.
- Therefore no matter how good we try to be, if we have done more good than bad, or are basically good people we are still guilty of sin before Holy God.
God saw how desperate our situation was, He knew that we could not save ourselves by trying to be good, and He knew that we have all sinned and are guilty before Him.
God loves us though, so He decided to come down from Heaven in the person of Jesus Christ to save us.
He did this by living a perfect and sinless life, He was 100% Holy on earth in the form of a man.
He then went to the cross, and God put all of our sins that we have or will commit on Jesus' account and unleashed the full extent of His wrath and judgment on Him.
Jesus died, and then rose again from the dead proving that He had paid the debt for us.
Jesus paid the price for us, He was able to do this by shedding His Holy and sinless blood on our behalf.
- This means that when we accept Jesus Christ as savior, God washes us and cleanses us in the blood of His Son. Jesus paid our penalty, so we don't have to, and now we can come to God and be with God.
I'm not as good at explaining this as the Bible is, but there is a lot of scripture behind it.
