UPDATE: US ship leaves Sevastopol following mass protests

SEVASTOPOL, September 2 (Itar-Tass) β€” The US costal guard ship Dallas has left Sevastopol at 7. 51 am local time Tuesday. The US ship arrived in Sevastopol on Monday after it had called at the Georgian sea port of Batumi. The US ship was scheduled to leave Sevastopol at 8. 00 pm Tuesday.

β€œThe fact that the US ship has left early is the evidence that the protesters had put the US marines under strong pressure,” said Deputy of the Ukrainian Rada Yevgeny Dubovik, who was an organizer of protests staged against the presence of the US ship in Sevastopol. Since early Monday until late at night people who gathered at the seaport had been chanting slogans "Yankee go home," Dubovik said.

The US crew failed to go on a sightseeing tour. On Monday evening the US crew gave a party on board the ship attended by senior officers of the Ukrainian Navy and border guards, but we immediately switched on loud music and silenced the US party, playing popular Russian World War II songs, Dubovik said.

The US ship arrived in Sevastopol after it had completed its "humanitarian mission" in Batumi. The US coastal guard ship has a displacement of around 3, 000 tons. Its speed is up to 29 knots and range is around 14,000 miles. Its crew numbers 167. The ship is equipped with artillery systems with a range of 15 kilometers and a carrier- based combat helicopter. The ship is capable to conduct air reconnaissance, spot submarines and wage radio-electronic war.
