Atomic Bomb Blast Effects on US Troops (Nevada,USA) 1959

(1959) Very interesting video for any who hasn't seen it before. Nuclear testing on the effects of an atomic blast on troops. Silent film and in colour. Duration over 8 minutes.

The troops relax and enjoy themselves, despite the fact they will soon be running toward a mushroom cloud. I would have given myself cancer from chain smoking before the bomb even went off. Props to these guys!

The Nevada National Security Site[1] (N2S2), previously the Nevada Test Site (NTS), is a United States Department of Energy reservation located in southeastern Nye County, Nevada, about 65 mi (105 km) northwest of the city of Las Vegas. Formerly known as the Nevada Proving Grounds,[2] the site, established on 11 January 1951, for the testing of nuclear devices, is composed of approximately 1,360 sq mi (3,500 km2) of desert and mountainous terrain. Nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site began with a 1-kilotonne-of-TNT (4.2 TJ) bomb dropped on Frenchman Flat on 27 January 1951.

Many of the iconic images of the nuclear era come from NTS. The Nevada Test Site contains 28 areas, 1,100 buildings, 400 miles (640 km) of paved roads, 300 miles (480 km) of unpaved roads, ten heliports and two airstrips.

  • This wasn't science, it was advertising. Letting the soviet union know what was possible and pretending that nuclear bombs were just another battlefield weapon.
Lambs to the slaughter.. one of the soldiers is reading a comic.

  • I knowin the 50's they favored moving Marine and paratroop units through there for the test shoots. They wanted to teach them to not fear the bomb.It worked. It also built confidence.
They taught you to take cover,to lookaway from the blact, and cover your eyes. After the detonation they stood upto feelthe shockwave. It was weak at that distance. They didn't get hit with thermal either. Both of those effects are limited in radius from ground zero.
Then they walked closer, with monitors, to see wha More..

so basically it was ok? I don't think
you are going to volunteer for this test

    • @grunt Those trenches seem kind of close to the point of impact- wouldn't being that close expose you to some pretty nasty rads?

Nope. The radioactivity is only close to the blast,or up in the cloud. The trench or hole, preferrably deep and covered, will protect you from the blast wave and the Thermal radiation, the flash you see that cooks shit. Both dissipate rapidly as the radius increases. There is far less fallout from a airburst. The soil and debris carried up in the fireball are radioactive fallout. As you go closer material and soil becomes radiated and radioactive. Some of the isotopes have very shor More..

  • That sequence beginning @ 3:30 is incredible.

And just think, this is a low-yield tactical nuke.

  • Good 'ole American patriots!

Listen to ANYTHING your government says or does. Then again, they are soldiers, aka pawns in the hands of the fat Generals watching the blast from the safety of their home.

I was a "American Patriot" in my day. 8 years in the Marines. And my IQ is 137.
This testing happened in the 50's. The Cold War was at it's peak,Russia had the H Bomb and the means to deliver it. Our cities were ringed with 90 and 120 mm AA gun batteries for about 7 years, until the Nike Hercules Missile sites were established all around our cities to replace the AA guns. And the Nikes were armed with tactiacl nuke warheads. The russians had multiple 10 and 20 megaton bombs ta More..
