Unidentified gunmen have shot dead a mayor of eastern Afghanistan’s Wardak Province, leaving his son injured in the attack as well.

"The Governor of Chak district, Mohammad Ismael Wafa, was on his way to office this morning when unidentified armed men opened fire on his vehicle killing him on the spot and injuring his son," provincial administration spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said.

The Taliban Mujahideen have claimed responsibility for the deadly attack west of Kabul.
