Malnourished twin girls in hospital, parents facing charges

EDMONTON - Two-year-old twin girls are in hospital, one on life support,
and the parents of the two girls are facing numerous charges.

Paramedics discovered the two girls in severe distress after a call to the Edmonton residence on May 25, 2012.

One
of the girls was in cardiac arrest, and the other suffering from
numerous injuries, including a life threatening head injury. The
paramedics were able to revive the girl who was suffering from a head
injury before the twins were transported to hospital.

Doctors at
the hospital found that one of the twins were severely malnourished, one
weighed only 13 pounds, while her sister weighed in at 16 pounds.

The
EPS Child at Risk Response Team began an investigation, and on June 12,
police charged the parents of the twins with two counts each of
aggravated assault, two counts each of criminal negligence causing
bodily harm and two counts each of failing to provide the necessities of
life, following consultation with the Crown.

A young boy was also living at the residence, but he was unharmed. He has since been placed into foster care.

The names of the parents cannot be released for the protection of the children.

The file has now been turned over to homicide investigators due to the life threatening injuries sustained by one of the twins.
