The soldiers of Combined Team – Uruzgan, Mentoring Task Force – Three
and their Afghan and coalition partners paid their final respects to
their fallen comrades Captain Bryce Duffy, Corporal Ashley Birt and
Lance Corporal Luke Gavin in a moving memorial service at Multi-National
Base Tarin Kot.
During the emotional service, respective officers and soldiers of CT-U
and MTF-3 reflected on the three soldiers, their careers, achievements
and the personal qualities for which they will be remembered by their
fellow soldiers, families and mates.
During the ceremony, the speakers also remembered the seven Australians
who were wounded during the tragic incident.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Australian, Afghan and International
Security Assistance Force personnel lined the road from the memorial
service to a waiting RAAF C-130 Hercules. They saluted as the sombre
procession of three Australian Flag- draped caskets moved through their
ranks. Paying their final respects to the fallen. The procession signals
the final departure from Afghanistan for the soldiers and the
commencement of their journey home to Australia.
