Shreveport firefighters and police are prying a man from a car crushed by the falling steeple of First United Methodist Church in downtown Shreveport.

The remnants of the steeple are blocking Common Street. Drivers should avoid the intersection of Common and Texas streets.

Wind broke glass in some buildings along Texas Street and shattered the glass globes of some streetlights.

Shreveport Police Chief Henry Whitehorn said damage appears to be widespread, with power lines down in several parts of the city.

Bossier City authorities also are reporting wind damage at Brownlee Estates and Greenacres Townhouses on Greenacres Road off Benton Road just north of Interstate 220.

High wind knocked down a utility pole, causing a fire at Greenacre Townhouses, said Bossier City spokesman Mark Natale.
