It was a cold, rainy and snowy night in Washington, D.C. when the president and first lady passed out Halloween candy — and dried fruit — to trick-or-treaters Saturday night.



President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama weren’t in costume themselves — though the first lady’s mother, Marian Robinson wore bunny ears — but greeted a steady stream of decked-out children on the White House north portico.



The treat-seekers were from local Washington, D.C.-area schools, the Boys and Girls Club of America and military families. The walk up to the White House was lined with decorative pumpkins and fake cobwebs.



“What’s this? Look at this guy,” the president said at the sight of one child in costume. “A headless man. Terrifying!”



Commenting on cold weather, Obama said to nearby reporters: “I know it’s cold here, you guys doing alright? It’s not ideal out here.”



The first lady hugged several of the clearly cold children and even wrapped one shivering child with her overcoat, declaring, “Oh, she’s freezing!”
