CAPE CANAVERAL, FL -- A historic launch site used for 145 U.S. space missions was demolished in Florida on Saturday. With a boom, the two 209-foot towers came crashing down at Cape Canaveral.

NASA demolished the towers because they were no longer being used. Built in 1961, the towers were part of surveying missions to the Moon, Venus, Mars and Jupiter.

Most of the 3,600 tons of steel that made up the launch towers will be re-cycled. 122 pounds of explosives were used in the demolition.

Complex 36 was used mostly by NASA until the late 1980's when the Air Force took it over.
