To explain how it works: it's probably an AM (amplitude modulation) radio tower. That means it's the audio signal is directly modulated onto the much higher carrier frequency, so the electrical current rises and falls proportionally to the audio signal, the moisture in the plants vaporises proportionally to the current which generates the sound waves.

Thanks for that. I wondered how it worked.

That just may work if the plant is grounded. As it is, the pole is grounded and no current flows into the plant because the dudes are isolated. The plant can at best act as a capacitor but it's capacitance is so low that I find it hard to believe that it could let enough current flow in and out to cause those sounds. Or the pole isn't grounded properly and the gloves are conducting some current. That too can be the case, but still hard to believe.

@atomsk That's where my thinking was going. If you had speaker wires coming off a powerful enough radio and amp, I think something like this could be replicated. that's current going through those weeds, not radiation.

@rubberball666 Could be both to some extent (capacitance and leaking current through the gloves). There is obviously going a significant current through the plants as you can see that they are getting really hot (judging from the evaporation and the reaction of the guy).

radio frequency transmissions are very dangerous, esp. what these are doing. that looks like quite a few kilowatts to me. being it's an Amplitude Modulated signal (google it) that sort of thing would happen if you stuck just about anything on the aerial. had some rf burns myself just from a 10 watt tx and that hurts, so, if he'd touched the aerial with bare hands, he'd be dead, minus his arm. that brown cylinder at the bottom is the insulator for the vertical mast. good way to catch cancer if th More..

@uncletom must be related to this. by the way, thanks for mentioning radio through telephone lines. I recall that from my childhood, but I didn't think anybody here in the US would have taken me seriously if I said it since I didn't think there'd be people here with the same experience.

This is obviously extremly dangerous, RF currents do not penetrate all that deeply into electrical conductors they flow along their surfaces - this is known technically as the skin effect... If/when the human body comes into contact with high power RF current it can cause serious RF burns...

@hooligram Yes, RF can burn the cornea of your eyes and thereby permanently impair your vision! In any case it is better to keep a safe distance from high powered antennas.
