PEPCO is DC's electrical utility, with one of the worst service records in the US.
On the 25th of September, OurDC showed up outside the Public Service Commission at 1333 H st to literally shine a spotlight on PEPCO's greed with actual spotlight. Anti-PEPCO slogans were chalked on the sidewalk, then pennies symbolic of PEPCO's greed were glued to the sidewalk following the letters.
The giant Greedy Pig was outside on the sidewalk keeping vigil over PEPCO's greed while speaker after speaker told stories of rotting food and "candlelight dinners" other than the romantic kind after the June "derecho" storm.
PEPCO has over the past decade or so fired about half their union linemen, relying instead on out-of-state contractors to cover mass outrages. This practice automatically adds days of travel time to get these crews into area to the repair time for any major outage. Meanwhile, the cost savings, which are never passed on to the public, allow PEPCO to make massive profits and pay huge salaries and bonuses to top officials. I guess that's "more important" than keeping DC residents lights on!
PEPCO's massive rate hikes have been rejected elsewhere, yet they still are asking DC for a $42M rate hike while CEO Joe Rigsby got paid $7 million last year for the worst service in the nation.
Tomorrow, the 26th of September, OurDC will show up at 1PM outside the Wilson Building for another noisy protest as the final decision on the rate hike is made
