A 7-year-old Spartanburg County girl died after she was thrown from an SUV following a high-speed chase on Interstate 85.

Queniya Tykia Shelton died at a local hospital at 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger said.

Sheriff Chuck Wright said deputies pursued the vehicle Queniya was riding in Monday morning after noticing erratic driving. The chase topped 100 mph before the 2012 Dodge Journey struck a guardrail and overturned in the median, ejecting the girl.

The girl’s aunt, 26-year-old Errika Shelton, was driving, Wright said. She suffered broken bones.

Wright said his deputies followed protocol but didn’t know a child was in the vehicle. He said the driver should have pulled over.
