It's time for real changes in Honduras

Tuesday, 30 June 2009 17:47

Hondurans have united like never before and have stood up to the world to protect and defend their democracy no matter what. Today I saw a large group of brave men and women stand side by side yelling, singing, dancing, cheering, clapping, and making their voice be heard all over the world.

The big peaceful manifestation that Hondurans put up this morning in Tegucigalpa’s Central Park in support of their new Constitutional Government has set an example to the world, that even though it is a small and one of the poorest countries in the world, it will not fall to authoritarian regimes like other Latin American countries have recently.

Today I heard the Honduran National Anthem sang like never before. There was a feeling of true patriotism in the people’s voice. The spirit that was felt this morning while the people sung can only be compared to the feeling of the national anthem being sung in a soccer world cup, a feeling that Hondurans long for again, since 1982.

This day will go into Honduran history as the day that the people united to fight for their rights and show the entire world that we are a strong democratic country and we will not fall.

However, this day will mean absolutely nothing if Hondurans don’t bring real change to the country. Yes, we can stand strong. But can we stand together to help ourselves get out of the misery we live in?

It’s easy to go out to the streets and protest against a threat to our democracy, but now we must work for real changes in our society. We must get rid of the apathy that has ruled in us.

Just like today, we must get up and fight for justice when justice is not served. When there aren’t enough medicines in the Hospital Escuela, when children are still out in the streets exposed to all kinds of drugs and abuse, when schools are not well equipped to teach our children, when there are so many Hondurans unemployed trying to make a living, when there are people starving and dying, when gangs take over our communities, when our elderly are suffering…

Let us not sit still anymore. We must get up and make a REAL change a REAL difference. We don’t have to go to the streets anymore, but we have to go out and look for a change. Donate money to the organizations and institutions that are out there in the front of the real war, donate your time as a volunteer, organize groups of help and aid, go out and reach someone in your community, do anything you want, but DO SOMETHING!

Hondurans can stand together. Hondurans can unite each other and be strong. Hondurans can fight a war. But it is an internal war and if everyone participates to make a difference, we WILL win that war.

Many of us have ignored our situation. Apathy has taken over our society. We have gotten used to our social problems and they don’t represent a threat anymore. We walk pass our less fortunate fellow citizens every day without even looking back or reaching out.

This attitude must stop. We have to stop and think what can I do, not what others can do. Let’s not expect others to come and solve our problems. Let’s make it our duty to bring this great nation out of its social problems. WE can do it, and then We will be the greatest example of change to the world.

If our attitude does not change and the people of Honduras keep getting mistreated, then our system will always be vulnerable to threats of authoritarian regimes.

Let the world see a small country stand up for itself when threatened and rise from the bottom into a GREAT nation. Give a helping hand to your neighbor, reach out to the poor and the needy, reach out to your country, and make a change.

Will B.O. listen?

and while Leftist Dictator hugo chavez threatens unilateral invasion of Honduras, after condemning the US in a similar context (obama did the same of Pres. Bush, voting no on the iraq war, but just the other day said the terrorists are on the wrong side of history, supporting everything Bush did and against his own personal actions, under which terrorism would have flourished uncontrollably.
