I Always wonder why its called JATO and not RATO...they are rocket assisted take offs..not jet assisted....maybe am just being pedantic...i think the Germans developed this technique in ww2 if am not mistaken...great aircraft the herc!

@the welshman I think Mythbusters played with that idea, I know there is a "Fake Darwin Award" on the subject? Supposedly a retired navy fellow attached one to his Old Chevy Nova. The result was allegedly a large splatter on the side of a cliff by the road.

Due to cost Approx. $85,000 per show the Navy Blue Angels no longer demonstrate the Jato Take off on Fat Albert. Practice was stopped about a year or so ago.
