A World Financial Center building in New York City, across the street
from the World Trade Center, is being evacuated because of a suspicious
package, police said.
A private security guard said he thought he saw
something suspicious while screening a package at 2 World Financial
Center. New York City Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said an
X-ray of the package appeared to reveal a grenade.A New York Police
Department bomb squad is at 2 World Financial Center and police are
investigating. It was believed to be a novelty grenade, according to an
official at the New York City Police Department.Employees have since
been cleared to return to the building.Two World Financial Center, a
towering skyscraper situated on the southern tip of Manhattan, counts
many major financial firms as its tenants.
The building was badly
damaged by falling debris during the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade
Center, and was closed for repairs until May 2002.
