JONESTOWN, MS - Jonestown, Mississippi is a tiny town near Clarksdale that, like many in the Delta, has seen better days. But residents say things would be a lot worse if not for the work of Catholic nuns like sister Teresa Shields.
"It's the nuns that really got the town going on," said resident Lillie Gober. "We need them," she added.
It shocked both young and old to hear that Shields, who came to Jonestown from the Pacific Northwest more than 20 years ago, was stabbed Saturday morning during an apparent robbery inside the home she shares with another nun.
"Whoever did that should be ashamed," said one student who attends an after school program run by Shields at a family center established by the nuns.
Michael Matthews has been arrested and is charged in the attack of Shields.
"That's just wrong what they did," said student Ashanti Lumpkin. "She's just a helpful lady."
"She's always kind and give us a lot of things," said student Tykhia Larry. "And I don't see why anyone would want to hurt her."
Jonestown Police confirmed the attack. They said the case was turned over to the Coahoma County Sheriff's Office. A chief deputy told Action News 5 a suspect was in custody. However, he did not immediately confirm the name already known all over town.
The other sisters who have devoted their lives to helping the people of this area were not yet ready to talk.
Sister Teresa Shields was listed in good condition at The MED in Memphis and thanked everyone for their prayers as she recuperates.
