Spradley befriended Mazza Wednesday morning without knowing he was a county jail inmate on the run from police for allegedly killing Paul Rein, a Broward Sheriff's Office detention deputy fatally shot shortly after 8 a.m. that morning in Pompano Beach.
The Defense Foundation group usually waits for an arrest and conviction to take place before offering the money, but Barry said they are making an exception for Spradley because he is homeless and living in his 1975 Chevrolet Caprice Classic.
