Police officers in Forsyth County said they are trying to figure out why four people chopped down a big tree and towed it right down a busy street.

Video from a security camera caught the bizarre scene on tape.

Police said four people in a pickup truck pulled up to a 30-foot Bradford pear tree, chopped it down, tied it to the back of their truck, and tore off down Highway 20.

Police said that a lot of laws were broken.

“We were kind of laughing our butts off. It was pretty funny, you know, to watch the video,” said Jarred Wallace of Southern Cinema Design.

Until last week, the tree stood in front of Southern Cinema Design. Their security cameras caught the incident on tape.

“You kind of wonder what they were thinking,” said White.

The men didn’t get very far. The tree got stuck on a curb a half block up, the chain snapped, and the bandits took off, police said.

“This is a major highway, so anyone near here’s life was immediately in danger from that tree being drug behind that vehicle,” said Sgt. Bryan Zimbardi of the Cumming Police Department.

Cumming police officers quickly identified the suspects from their pickup truck, including its owner, Stanley Hendrix, police said.

Police said officers had questioned Hendrix.

“They said they had a paid tree job to cut this tree down and they were coming to fill a contract,” said Zimbardi.

So far, police said they haven’t found the property owner to back up Hendrix’s story.

Police said they plan to charge Hendrix and the others with reckless conduct and reckless driving. Police said felony charges could follow if the men took the tree without permission.
