12 Tourists have been injured in a bomb blast in the Maldive islands. Among those injured was British,Chinese,Japanese citizens.

The device which caused the explosion appears to be a Homemade bomb.

The blast happened outside the main mosque in Male, the capital of the republic of islands in the Indian Ocean.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We believe that two British nationals were injured and we are seeking to confirm this with the authorities in the Maldives."

The device - which was reportedly made from a washing machine motor attached to a gas cylinder - exploded near a park.

Witnesses reported seeing nails scattered in the park, before the area was cleared by local security forces.

Thousands of tourists from the UK visit the idyllic islands each year, many of them couples on their honeymoon. Tourists normally stay on resort islands away from the capital but usually pass through Male to get there.
