Part of an RAF information film depicting a practise emergency scramble in 1958.
The RAF's V bomber bases in central East England were assumed to be the first target for the Soviet Air Force's bomber fleet.
The Avro Vulcan bomber and it's sister machines, the Vickers Valiant, and Handley Page Victor, were designed to deliver nuclear free fall bombs to the vast array of military installations ringing Moscow.
Any surviving aircraft were to head for bases in Scotland after their mission, on the assumption their home airfield would have been a radio active wasteland.
