Serbia - "UN's Toxic Shame" - the Gypsy refugee camps were put next to poisonous lead mines (June 2009)

"9 years ago the UN chose to house 150 gypsy families, also known as Roma, in UN refugee camps next to Europes largest lead mine. Lead poisoning is now slowly killing them off - children first.

These families survived ethnic cleansing during the Kosovo war but will their children survive the lead contamination of the UNs refugee camp? These children have 4 to 5 times the amount needed to cause brain damage.

'They told me these are the highest levels they've measured in human hair worldwide.'

Two of the camps were moved to a former NATO base but the rest of the refugees still remain.

'It is a health emergency' says Dr Nitzan. Mr Polansky remembers seeing the camp and proclaiming This is toxic waste land. You can't put them here.' But his concerns were ignored. If the remaining families here are not evicted, this will be the end of the gypsies."

  • I thought the whole point of being a gypsy is that you move from place to place once in a while...if they are so worried why don't they just fire up the donkeys and ride off to a clean pasture somewhere and pollute the crap out of it as usual?

  • Las, the Roma are by and large an evil people. They treat their own like dirt. I will not go into details but they use thier babies, just days old without any hydration, to garner sympathy and beg on city streets. Ever been swarmed by Roma kids in any European city? Ever lost your wallet in that encounter? It's disgusting.
