How the Dutch got their cycling infrastructure

How did the Dutch get their cycling infrastructure? This question
keeps coming back because it is of course relevant to people who want
what the Dutch have.
Road building traditions go back a long way and they are influenced
by many factors. But the way Dutch streets and roads are built today is
largely the result of deliberate political decisions in the 1970s to
turn away from the car centric policies of the prosperous post war era.
Changed ideas about mobility, safer and more livable cities and about
the environment led to a new type of streets in the Netherlands.

The recent video to introduce the Dutch Cycling Embassy
explains this very briefly, but there is a lot more that can be said
about it. That is why I made a longer video for a more in depth look
into the history of cycling infrastructure in the Netherlands.

  • That's a cool story and nice post. Couldn't help but hear psychopaths every time he said cycle paths.

    • @thirstyschaivo

I've cycled in amsterdam. It's nice there are many bicycle lanes but the problem is that it's an utterly mess. Parked cars, pedestrians, taxis parked on it.

Like in Copenhagen and several German cities they are way more ahead by making cycling zones (no regular car traffic)

    • @p8urbyk5 I was thinking that perhaps the Netherlands don't have a national car industry like other European countries do. Because these industries have a lot of power in policy making and it doesn't make sense for them to push for bike transportation.

  • Love the cycling infrastructure and the Netherlands in general. Great country and people. The UK is as usual trying to bodge cycle paths and lanes all over the country and as usual making a right fucking hash of it. They are pissing of the motorists because they are encroaching and trying to squeeze cycle lanes in amongst motor lanes. Result is a lot of pissed of motorists and cyclists in more danger than ever. The available lanes are not maintained by local councils so inevitably (being a cycli More..

  • Voted and faved! Yesterday when a video showing a woman killed by traffic while attempting to cross a busy street, everybody blamed the woman. Especially in the USA people believe that cars are a birthright and can't think life is possible without. Pedestrians are bearing all the inconvenience of the car overload. I wish the car-friendly policies were reconsidered. I know the mayor of Paris is doing a lot to make the city more bike friendly.

    • @khamomil Guess you've never been to Murica. Bikes have the right of way on all American roads except highways. Even here in redneckville Missouri we have thousands of miles of bike paths and bike only lanes.

    • @GatewayMetalHead I lived 18 years in New York City and even worked there for a spell as a bike messenger. Right or no right, bikes and pedestrians are under threat by traffic.

  • It also helps if your country is nice and flat.

    • @pinkskin
Most cities in the US are nice and flat. The fact is that Americans are addicted to and fascinated by motorized activities. Plus, it fits with their overall paranoia, their fear, sometimes justified, to just take a walk or a bike ride in their own city (try to see somebody on the sidewalk in downtown Atlanta passed 7pm).

Atl is not the place to drop your guard and "be care free". Walking down the wrong sidewalk after dark will get you killed here.
If ignorance is bliss then you must be one happy fool.

  • "The Netherlands has the worlds largest number of cyclists" I'm pretty sure China has more cyclists then Dutch have people, by at least tenfold. Percentage wise? That might be a different story.

  • I was told not to drive into downtown there. "it's more pedestrian and bike friendly". I took that as a challenge and away I went in my rented Mercedes. Turns out that there were plenty of other rude fuckers just like me driving around in downtown Amsterdam.
    good times
