Exploring Cigarette Smoke and Other Allergies

Research shows that respiratory infections and asthma are higher in the family smoking individuals. Cigarettes contain highly irritating and toxic substances. An individual suffering from a smoke allergy is more sensitive to smoke.

Cigarette smoke includes many toxic chemicals and irritants. Smokers can harm the people around them. An individual, who grew up in a family of smokers, has increased risk respiratory infections and asthma.

One distinguishing characteristics of hay fever is that it is caused by pollen and other similar grains. There are two types of allergic rhinitis: seasonal and perennial. Seasonal allergic rhinitis happens during pollination period of the year. On the other hand, the perennial type is a year round type.

The type of reaction will determine the difference between hay fever and nonallergic rhinitis. When hay fever happens during springtime, chances are, tree pollen is the culprit. During summertime, grass and weed pollen may cause allergies. Although fungus spores and weeds can be present all the time, these can pose as problems from late March through November. Other allergens, such as those found indoors can also cause reactions to people with perennial hay fever.

Things like curtains, beddings, carpet and so much more can be hiding places of allergens such as dust mites and animal dander. Mold thrives in damp areas. Bathrooms and basements are common areas where this allergen can be found. Hay fever may be activated by these substances.

An oral antihistamine is used to reduce itching, swelling and hives. An example of antihistamine is Benadryl. To reduce the pain, a pain reliever may be taken. An ice pack may also be used to reduce local inflammation. A recommended treatment for an individual with insect allergy is an allergy shot. An allergy shot can also prevent the occurrence of anaphylaxis in the future. Extensive swelling and redness can be manifested for a week or two. These symptoms are accompanied with nausea, fatigue, and low-grade fever.

Difficulty of breathing, hives, swelling of the face, throat or mouth, wheezing or difficulty swallowing, restlessness and anxiety, rapid pulse, dizziness, and a sudden drop in blood pressure are the symptoms of an anaphylaxis reaction. When stung, remove the stinger as soon as possible. It is the top priority when an individual is stung.

Many people think that pet allergy is caused by their pet's fur. The protein found in saliva causes allergy. Saliva remains as the animal licks its fur. Another source of protein allergen is urine. Proteins can become airborne when the substance carrying it dries.

Cats tend to have more allergens than dogs do. Licking their bodies more, people holding them more as well as people spending their time more attending to cats are just a few reasons. Guinea pigs as well as other rodents have become popular pets. Allergic reactions occur when urine from rodents like mice and rats gets in contact with some people.

Naturally occurring sulfites are a group of sulfur-based substances used in food enhancement and preservation. Statistics provided by the US FDA puts sulfite sensitivity occurrence at 1 out of a hundred people. At any point in life, sulfite sensitivity may develop with no apparent antecedent.

Mild to life-threatening reactions may be experienced by sulfite sensitive people. A ban on the use of sulfites on produce that are to be eaten raw was imposed by the FDA on 1986. The FDA now requires manufacturers to list sulfites, if used, on their product labels. Nowadays, sulfites are not used on most fresh food. However, a variety of cooked and processed food may still contain sulfites. Fermented wine and beer contain sulfites.

People who experience sensitivity reactions to sulfites should steer clear from products containing sulfites. Reading labels on all food items is essential for people with sulfite sensitivity. When eating out, it is best to inquire from the person cooking your meals if sulfite was used at any time during preparation.
