FDA Commissioner Has Meltdown on National TV

Food and Drug Administration Deputy Commissioner Steve Hoyer reached his breaking point and lashed out at journalists during a televised news conference. Faced with relentless criticism by the Tea Party, Ron Paul and Michelle Bachmann, FDA spokespersons have been increasingly on the defensive. With the recent introduction of the Food Safety Modernization Act, the FDA has come under considerable fire by critics of the administration. FDA spokespersons have had to answer charges that the administration has become America's "food safety Gestapo." Driven by a recent spate of salmonella and e.coli cases in the United States, the bipartisan bill is intended to increase regulations on food suppliers and production facilities. Tea Party activists recently sent out an email urging members to "melt the phones" of congressional lawmakers to oppose the bill, as "dangerous intrusions" of the government into small business. Following Commissioner Hoyer's comments, calls to his office for further comments went unanswered.
